Durham Lions Club: Luther Barbour Scholarship

 One of the charter members of the Durham Lions Club, Luther H Barbour, bequeathed a substantial sum for the creation of a scholarship. The fund was established in 1985 and our own Johnnie Cozart was the first recipient of a Luther Barbour scholarship.

The criteria for awarding these scholarship(s).
Since its’ inception, The Durham Lions Scholarship Committee has generally awarded one new scholarship each year and renewed the other three existing scholarships annually. The following criteria for scholarships apply:

• Graduating member of a Durham City or County High School (at the current time we no longer enjoy a relationship with Durham Public Schools and offer our scholarships to any graduating member of a high school located in Durham County)
• The scholarship shall be in the amount of $1000.00, renewable for 3 years
• Scholarship funds must be paid to the institution student is attending
• Institutions may be four year colleges or universities, graduate schools, community colleges, vocational or technical schools and professional trade schools.
• Scholarships shall be awarded based upon academic excellence as evidenced by other scholarship competition & participation, transcripts and class standing. Applicants need to demonstrate a reasonable likelihood of completing the course of study at the accepting institution. Personal recommendations and other accomplishments can be considered.
• Renewal of the scholarship must be by written request accompanied by evidence of satisfactory progress Process for identifying applicants:

 In March of each year the Durham Lions Scholarship Committee will send out letters to various high school guidance counselors seeking qualified applicants. The following information will be requested and must be submitted by June 1st:
• Students’ full name, address and contact information (on high school letterhead)
• Academic class standing with transcript – other pertinent information
• Name, address and contact information of institution of higher learning where student has been accepted After June 1st, the entire committee will evaluate the applications submitted and make a recommendation to the board for the awarding of a scholarship before the July Board meeting. All scholarship renewal applications must be submitted by June 15th accompanied by proper documentation. The entire committee can review these requests and make a recommendation to the Board for the July meeting.
