Duke University Neuroscience Experience (DUNE)

The summer 2026 Duke University Neuroscience Experience (DUNE)! DUNE is a full-time, 8-week, paid summer research internship program (June 15 – August 7) for Durham high school students. DUNE’s mission is to provide students with scientific skills, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to position them for success in STEM fields. Summer 2026 will be the sixth year of DUNE!

 

High school students can apply online from December 15, 2025 – February 8, 2026. Two (2) letters of recommendation from non-relatives are also required. To apply, students must:

• Be a current sophomore or junior (grades 10-11 for the 2025-2026 school year); and
• Attend a public or charter high school in Durham, NC.

Durham Bulls Broadcasting Opportunity

The Durham Bulls Explorer Post 50 is a co-ed unpaid internship program designed for students aged 14-20. This program offers a unique and invaluable chance to gain exceptional experience in the field of television broadcasting, supported and sponsored by the Durham Bulls, Fox 50, and Capitol Broadcasting Company.

 In our remarkable 27th season, Post 50 is responsible for the live broadcast of Durham Bulls home games on several WRAL platforms, MiLB.com, and within the ballpark. Additionally, we contribute highlights for FOX 50 and WRAL newscasts.

 

This program is an excellent platform for students to explore their interest in broadcast communications and gain practical, hands-on experience in a professional setting.

 Any HS student who is interested in a career in Journalism is encouraged to check out the in Elon University Emerging Journalists Program! This is an ideal opportunity for high school students to explore what it means to be a journalist, to report and to produce news that informs communities. Applications are now open, and students may apply for our virtual sessions only or for both the virtual component and the on-campus summer experience, scheduled for June 16-27, 2025, at Elon. This on-campus residential learning workshop is open to students from diverse socio-economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds. And, again, it’s completely free. BigFuture Ambassadors

 

BigFuture is inviting students entering 10th, 11th, and 12th grades to apply to become BigFuture® Ambassadors. The application deadline is Friday, August 30! Ambassadors help their classmates plan for career and college while in high school. That includes helping their classmates use the BigFuture® School mobile app to access their PSAT/NMSQT® scores, connect with nonprofit colleges and scholarship providers, and get career and college insights. Ambassadors also empower their classmates to use BigFuture.org to find careers, colleges, scholarships, and more.

Ambassadors are part of a national community of hundreds of students who connect with each other through Zoom meetings and support each other via Discord.

One Day to Learn It All

Voyager Academy HS students are invited to join the Virtual Summer Open House on Saturday, July 13, 2024! In just one day, they will be able to learn everything they need to know about Hopkins and how to apply. Students can personalize this Virtual Summer Open House to their unique interests by choosing which sessions they’d like to attend. Elizabeth City State University has a great new opportunity for any students interested in becoming a pilot, air traffic controller, or unmanned aircraft systems (drone) operator. Rising seniors and juniors can take up to 6 credits of college coursework paid for by a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration.  The grant can also cover other costs of becoming a pilot or drone operator.

West Point - Summer Leaders Experience

West Point develops Leaders of Character, and are looking for high-achieving young people who are in great standing with their school and community, and who want to challenge themselves. 

What is SLE?

• SLE is a one-week program for current Juniors (High School Class of 2025) to visit West Point in June.
• Students in this program get to spend the week with our cadets, live in the barracks, and eat in the mess hall.
• Learn about West Point’s world class academics by trying 5 of our 17 academic workshops.
• Learn about military training and becoming a Leader of Character at West Point by completing two military days to include rappelling, Zodiac boats, combatives (like Jiu-Jitsu) training and more!
• Challenge themselves physically by attempting the Candidate Fitness Assessment, conducting physical training, and sports.
• Complete their admissions interview with a cadet.
• Spend the week making friends with other students from all over the US who are applying to West Point.

2024 FBI Charlotte Teen Academy

The FBI Charlotte 2024 Teen Academy will welcome high school students (sophomores, juniors and seniors) between the ages of 15-18 to a three-day program this summer beginning Wednesday, July 17^th to Friday, July 19^th from 9:00am -3:30pm each day.  All sessions will be held at the Charlotte FBI headquarters. 

 

Students will learn about SWAT Teams, evidence collection, and investigations, among other fun activities; and they will have the chance to interact with FBI Agents and professional staff every day. 

 

Students 16 an older must complete the “Record Check Consent Form”

 

The deadline to submit applications is April 18, 2024.

The Next Step 2024 program will be available February 19th through May 31st for NC high school juniors and parents!  Just click on the Junior Next Step Form button on this page and you can:

1. Share your plans and needs. Whether you are thinking about an apprenticeship, military, work, community college, or four-year college, now is a great time to take action.  We'll immediately provide you with tips and links to assist in your areas of interest.  We'll also share your plans and needs with the counseling team at your high school.
2. Connect with NC colleges.  You can choose to share your contact information with NC community colleges and four-year colleges so they can let you know more about their programs.
3. Join the online program to take steps toward your goals.  You'll have exclusive access to two sets of self-paced online activities.  If you are planning to continue your education, one set of six activities will help you take six steps toward a community college or a four-year college.  If you are planning to enter the workforce, another set of three activities will help you explore career and training options. NCSU SATELITE Camp for High School Sophomores

 

SATELLITE is a five-day STEM outreach and leadership development program with the goal of exposing high school sophomores from under-resourced communities in North Carolina to post-secondary educational opportunities in STEM and its many disciplines. SATELLITE Campers have had the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities including a field trip to the Museum of Natural Sciences, an egg drop competition, plant biology seminars, workshops in paper science engineering, textiles and design, game theory, and hands-on life sciences demonstrations led by genuine NC State faculty and students. SATELLITE’s mission is fueled by our desire and passion to help close the higher educational divide among communities through equitable opportunities and exposure. 

The 2024 program will run from May 18th - 22nd. The application encourages two letters of recommendation ( however are not required ) and a few short essays pertaining to the student’s interest in the field of STEM and college exposure. Due to the nature of the program, they do not consider a student’s academic success when reviewing applications, they are looking only for a student’s desire to maximize their experience at SATELLITE and hone their curiosity. The deadline to apply is March 8th, 2024. If accepted, there will be a $25 registration fee, but a number of need-based scholarships and financial assistance opportunities are available upon request.

VT's Black College Institute application is closing soon!

 

Greetings from Virginia Tech! Applications for Virginia Tech's 7th annual Black College Institute (BCI) are live and will be closing soon (April 10th)!  We invite high-achieving and intellectually curious rising high school juniors and seniors to apply and participate in this summer academic leadership program! Click here to download our flyer.
