Emily K College Expo 2023

 The Emily K Center is excited to announce our next event: our third annual College Expo on Saturday, March 25th 2023! 


The 2023 College Expo will feature a college fair with more than 35 colleges and universities. The Expo will also host several workshops led by college access experts focused on topics like how to pay for college, how to select the best college for you, how to be a competitive college applicant, and more!

Event details are as follows:

WHEN: Saturday, March 25, 2023, from 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm 

WHERE: The Emily Krzyzewski Center, 904 W Chapel Hill Street, Durham, NC 27701

WHAT: FREE college fair as well as college workshops available to students and families

2023 SECU People Helping People Scholarship

 

2023 Charter High School Scholarship Program Operating Procedures

The SECU Foundation People Helping People Scholarship Program will award three (3) graduating North Carolina charter school seniors attending one of the 16 constituent campuses of the UNC System each one scholarship valued at $10,000 (payable at $1,250 per semester). 

Each graduating senior meeting the eligibility criteria will be considered for the scholarship. The SECU Foundation People Helping People Scholarship will only be available to graduating public high school seniors who are either members of State Employees’ Credit Union (“SECU”) or eligible for membership through a parent/guardian who is an SECU member.

All charter high schools will use a Scholarship Selection Committee to select one applicant for the scholarship for their high school. Applications for VAHS students are due to Ms. O'Kane by 3/14/23 at 4:00.  

The Selection Committee of the NC Office of Charter Schools will make the final determination of the three scholarship recipients

2023-2024 Aubrey Lee Brooks Scholarship Program – Submission Deadline Extended

 The submission deadline for the 2023-2024 school year Aubrey Lee Brooks Scholarship Program application has been extended until March 1, 2023 (originally February 14).   The application system will shut off at 11:59pm (March 1) and after that time no actions related to the application submission process will be permitted.  

 

Students must electronically submit their completed application, and all required associated documentation via the application system (MyPortal) by March 1 to receive consideration.  There will be no additional extensions.

A complete application consists of:

  1. Application
  2. NC High School Academic Transcript (must include final grades for Fall 2022 term classes)
  3. SAT/ACT Scores (if not taken, a memo must be uploaded explaining why)
  4. Recommendations (2)
  5. 2023-2024 FAFSA (fully processed by the US Dept. of Education)

 

Note:

  • Items 1, 2 and 3 are submitted electronically via the student’s account in the application system (MyPortal).
  • Recommendations are submitted electronically by student selected recommenders via a system provided MyPortl link.
  • We will be able to obtain student’s FAFSA information directly from the US Dept. of Education if at least one NC college/university is listed in the school section.

Triangle Community Foundation Scholarships are Now Open

 


             Triangle Community Foundation's 2023 scholarship applications are now open!  

Deadline for all applications is March 1, 2023.


These scholarships are part of our universal online application, meaning you will complete a short eligibility section before the system shares all the scholarships for which you are eligible. Each scholarship will have supplemental questions, many of which are shared across applications. All materials must be submitted by the deadline in order to be considered complete.

Almac Scholarship, $50,000 
First-year college students in the Triangle who are pursuing a four-year degree at an NC public college or university. Applicants should demonstrate financial need and a desire to connect with Almac for career guidance, connection to current employees, and insight into the pharmaceutical industry. 

Benjamin F. Ward Scholarship$10,000 
Graduating high school seniors in Wake, Durham, Orange, or Chatham counties planning to attend a four-year public or private college or university in North Carolina. Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5  with demonstrated commitment to community service and family financial need.

Carol Ann Beerstecher Nursing Scholarship$5,000-$10,000
Resident of Chatham, Durham, Orange, Wake or Person County, North Carolina for at least 12 months, current nursing student or have been admitted to a nursing program at an accredited institution in North Carolina offering an associate or baccalaureate degree in nursing. Must have a proven financial need and a 2.0 GPA.

Elizabeth Marie Roberts Scholarship$8,000
Graduating seniors from Northern High School, Riverside High School, Voyager Academy, or Durham School of the Arts. Must be accepted into any public state university or college in North Carolina, Watts School of Nursing, or Durham Technical Community College and have a minimum GPA of 2.5 with demonstrated family financial need. 

GSK Opportunity ScholarshipUp to $20,000
Reside in Chatham, Durham, Orange, or Wake counties for a minimum of one year. Attend a public state university or community college in NC. Applicants should demonstrate the potential to succeed despite adversity as well as an exceptional desire to improve himself or herself through further education or training.

iContact Foundation ScholarshipUp to $20,000
1) Have been employed by iContact at any time, 2) be the child (biological, foster, adopted, or step) of an iContact employee at any time, or 3) be a person living in Chatham, Durham, Orange, or Wake county who is majoring in computer science, business or entrepreneurship, economics, or marketing and communications. Scholarship recipients are selected based on demonstrated financial need, community involvement and leadership, and academic merit.


Joseph Nystrom Working Student ScholarshipUp to $16,000
Students in Orange, Wake, Durham, Chatham, or Alamance counties who are working at least part-time while in school and have demonstrated financial need.

Juanita McNeil West End Scholarship$2,000
Graduating high school seniors in Durham County with a minimum GPA of  2.5 and demonstrated financial need. Residents of the West End Community (zip codes 27701 and 27707) are encouraged to apply and will be given preference.

NC American Indian Fund Scholarship$1,000
Enrolled in a state- or federally-recognized tribe (with documentation), demonstrate sustained involvement in the American Indian Community and commitment to American Indian concerns and initiatives, and have family residency in the state. Be currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a post-secondary institution in North Carolina, maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, and plan to pursue a two-year or four-year undergraduate degree as a full-time student at an accredited public, private, or technical college or university. Please note there is a separate application for new applicants and previous recipients of this scholarship in the portal.

Shaver-Hitchings Scholarship, $1,500
Resident of Durham, Orange, Wake, or Chatham counties and be enrolled or planning to enroll in graduate school, a physician assistant program, or medical school. Applicants should have experience serving those with substance abuse disorder or with preventive education on the subject of addiction. 


Ruby Ennis Maynard Scholarship$2,500
Single mothers or female heads of household in Chatham, Durham, Orange, Wake or Onslow counties. Applicants should demonstrate a desire to improve their skills to succeed in their current career or to change careers.
 
Triangle Scholarship Fund$10,000
One high school senior and one adult learner in Chatham, Durham, Orange, or Wake counties planning to attend a public or private college or university in North Carolina. Must have a 2.5 GPA and demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to improving their community through volunteer work, work experience, and/or future aspirations and plans.






NCSU Pre-College Summer Programs

 


With the summer approaching soon, we want to share information about the college enrichment opportunities that could be of interest to VAHS students. NCSU will  host three pre-college programs for rising juniors and seniors to learn about higher education opportunities and cultural reinforcement. This is for students to find and build a strong sense of community while also preparing for the college application process and university experience.


CAMINOS: Your Journey to College is geared towards students who identify as Hispanic or Latinx or have an interest in the culture. The program will be held from June 18-22.

Native Education Forum is geared towards students who identify as Native American or American Indian or have an interest in the culture. The program will be held from June 18-24.

Emerging Scholars Academy is geared towards students who identify as Black or African American or have an interest in the culture. The program will be held from June 25-July 1.

All summer programs will be in person, and students will stay in residence halls for their participation. Students with a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.4 or higher or are in the top 15% of their class and are interested in pursuing college should apply. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 7. For more information, visit the

Bridging The Dream College Scholarship For HS Seniors

 


Any high school senior planning to attend a two- or four-year college, or continuous education program in the fall  may be eligible for a $10,000 Bridging the Dream Scholarship from The Sallie Mae Fund and Thurgood Marshall College Fund. High school seniors who are US citizens or permanent residents and plan to enroll in an accredited post-secondary institution or continuous education program during the 2023-2024 academic year are eligible. Applicants must demonstrate leadership skills and moral character, as well as submit a short video describing how the scholarship will assist them in achieving their goals.

Free Classes from The College Tour TV Series

Below you will find a number of classes to help you learn about and navigate your higher education journey. Each class is video-based, using segments from The College Tour TV series. All videos in the class are told by your peers. The classes are for all ages, from middle school to high school students to adult learners. We have also found that teachers, counselors, and parents see value in taking these classes in order to have educated conversations with young people about their college search.

All classes are FREE and take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete!
