The Elizabeth Marie Roberts Scholarship

The Elizabeth Marie Roberts Scholarship was established through Dr. Roberts’ Last Will and Testament in order to continue her tradition of service by providing scholarships to students living in the community.  Dr. Roberts was born and raised in the Bahama community of northern Durham County and returned to Bahama after completing her undergraduate degree at UNC-Greensboro and her medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina. She made it her life’s work to provide quality medical service in that rural community. Marie, known by many as ‘Doc,’ was a general practitioner dedicated to her patients.
Scholarships will be valued at a minimum of $2,000 per year for up to four years and will provide financial awards for graduating seniors from Northern High School, Riverside High School, Voyager Academy, or Durham School of the Arts.  Recipients will be selected based on their character, academic record, service to the community and financial need, with preference given to students residing in the township of Bahama and/or pursuing degrees in health-related fields.  Scholarships can be used for tuition, required fees, and textbooks, at any public state university or college in North Carolina, Watts School of Nursing, or Durham Technical Community College.

Florida State First Year Abroad Program

The First Year Abroad (FYA) program allows students to complete the first twelve months of their Florida State careers while studying abroad with International Programs. Students choose to spend their first year at any of our four year-round study centers: London, England; Florence, Italy; Panama City, Republic of Panama; Valencia, Spain. Participants may opt to change their location for the summer term and spend it at another study center, though visa restrictions apply for some locations.

Read below from a former VAHS grad has to say about this program:

This program is such a great opportunity for all students. Not only do you get to live in a foreign country for a year and travel, but the friendships you make will last a life time. I loved being able to be fully immersed in a culture and participate in their festivals and traditions. And you get in-state tuition at the end of the year making Florida State an affordable option!

Leadership Converse

This past summer, Converse College hosted her 3rd Annual Leadership Converse, a three-and-a-half day workshop for rising female juniors and seniors. We are officially kicking off the search for participants of the fourth year of this exciting program! The goal of the program is to teach students that leadership is a process where individuals or groups work together to create positive, sustainable change.  Students who are active in their communities or in leadership roles, have a passion for helping others, and who have a vision for positive change are encouraged to apply.

In the spirit of “everyone can do leadership”, we are committed to offering the program at no cost to students who are invited to attend. We are passionate about equitable access to the program, so housing, meals and supplies will be provided for the participants of the program. The only thing students will be responsible for is transportation to and from the camp, if they are accepted to attend.

The application is available online through April 15, 2017.  It is live now! Converse will not accept any applications after April 15th at 5:00 PM.  Three short essays and a letter of recommendation are required. The dates for Leadership Converse are July 23-26, 2017.

More information and application can be found at www.converse.edu/leadershipconverse.
