WUNC Summer Youth Reporting Institute

WUNC is seeking applicants for our 2018 Summer Youth Reporting Institute.  We will be hiring 6-8 youth reporters who will be trained up to produce a radio and online story that tells us something new about their world.    This is part of WUNC’s effort to reflect the community it serves.  Our youth reporters help WUNC listeners learn something new about the world.

No journalism experience is necessary, but successful candidates will be engaged with their community, good communicators, curious and fearless.  All applications will be reviewed and considered but this program is designed for older high school age youth (Juniors, Seniors and recent graduates).

Each year our Youth Reporters cover a range of issues often using their own stories as a part of the narrative.  Last summer our reporters covered a racial incident at schoola student lead effort to close the achievement gap and a radical effort to help drug users survive another day.

We’ve got a video about our program here.

This is a learning experience for participating students but it’s also a job with expectations.  It’s 20 hours a week, paid and runs from June 14 – August 10.  While some exceptions can be made for second jobs, college visits and orientations Youth Reporters are expected to be able to work the entire 8-weeks.  The deadline to apply is May 11, 2018.

If you have any questions about the program please contact David Brower dbrower@wunc.org or 919-445-9171.

If you have a class, club or youth gathering that would like a visit from our team to tell you more about these jobs please contact Kimani Hall khall@wunc.org.

Please forward this to any and all who might be interested in rewarding summer employment.

Interested students can apply for these jobs here.
