Local College Scholarship for Durham County HS Seniors

 

CRITERIA

Persons eligible to receive scholarships from the Scholarship Endowment shall possess the following

qualifications: a graduating senior from a Durham County high school with demonstrated financial

need, average academic achievement, community involvement, and participation in athletics who is

pursuing a two- or four-year degree at a community college, college or university. Special

consideration may be given to a student who has been involved with the Swingpals, Inc. program.

Renewable: The scholarship recipient may renew the scholarship for up to three (3) additional years

so long as the student remains enrolled in an educational institution as a full-time student.

DEADLINE

Applications for this scholarship are due by March 15.

Scholarship awards are made in the late spring or early summer; scholarship

payments are made directly to the student’s college or university.

As part of Financial Aid Awareness month, NCSEAA and CFNC are pleased to continue the How to Pay for College webinar series. CFNC Next Step Program for Juniors and families is coming soon!

 

The Next Step 2024 program will be available February 19th through May 31st for NC high school juniors and parents!  Just click on the Junior Next Step Form button on this page and you can:

1. Share your plans and needs. Whether you are thinking about an apprenticeship, military, work, community college, or four-year college, now is a great time to take action.  We'll immediately provide you with tips and links to assist in your areas of interest.  We'll also share your plans and needs with the counseling team at your high school.
2. Connect with NC colleges.  You can choose to share your contact information with NC community colleges and four-year colleges so they can let you know more about their programs.
3. Join the online program to take steps toward your goals.  You'll have exclusive access to two sets of self-paced online activities.  If you are planning to continue your education, one set of six activities will help you take six steps toward a community college or a four-year college.  If you are planning to enter the workforce, another set of three activities will help you explore career and training options. You’ll be guided through the steps with interactive videos and action items, along with special content for parents.  Also, you'll have a team of NC graduate students to help you with questions along the way.

Durham Tech. CCP Information Sessions

The HSF Scholar Program Application Deadline Is February 15

Summer Leadership Experience for Rising Freshman/Graduated Seniors

The Shelton Challenge at North Carolina Wesleyan University cannot wait for Summer 2024!

The Shelton Challenge is a six-day (July 14-19, 2024) residential leadership experience to help students expand their knowledge and skills of what it takes to be an effective leader. Offered to rising 9th-grade (transitioning from 8^th to 9^th grade) to graduated seniors (those heading into freshman year of college) with a 3.0+ unweighted GPA, hands-on activities focus on: personal leadership assessment and interpersonal dynamics, the role of values and ethics in leadership, leadership traits and approaches, empowering others, civic and social responsibility and goal setting. In addition to these aptitudes, students also engage in team-building activities like low- and high-ropes courses, rock climbing walls, service projects, and social activities in the evenings.

The cost to attend the Shelton Challenge six-day residential program is $500. This cost includes all curriculum materials, lodging and food, low and high ropes training, transportation during the week, and night activities. With submitting the application, please mail a $100 deposit to hold space in the program. The deposit will go toward the final payment of $500. Please make all checks or money orders payable to the Shelton Challenge at N.C. Wesleyan University. Financial aid scholarships are available to applicants. 

NC Wesleyan University will offer a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to students who complete the Shelton Challenge and enroll as a full-time undergraduate student at North Carolina Wesleyan University. The scholarship is renewable for each academic year (fall/spring) if the student maintains an overall GPA of at least a 2.70 (and is enrolled as a full-time student) for a maximum of four academic years.

2024 Hagan Scholarship

 The Hagan Scholarship

The Hagan Scholarship is a nationwide need-based merit scholarship, providing recipients with the opportunity to achieve their goals and graduate college debt-free. Applicants must graduate from a high school located in the United States. Applicant’s Adjusted Gross Household Income reported for 2022 Federal Income Tax Purposes must not have exceeded $100,000. Free workshops, Free Schwab Brokerage Accounts, and Free Study Abroad provide recipients with a practical understanding of important life skills not typically covered in the school curriculum. Recipients graduating college while in the Hagan Scholarship Program can apply for a Hagan Graduate Scholarship good for up to four additional consecutive semesters.

Hagan Scholars have attended over 500 colleges and universities located in 48 states.

SPECIAL ANNOUCEMENT!

NCSEAA and CFNC have organized a Statewide FAFSA Day this Saturday morning, January 27. Partners all across the state will open their doors from 9 am - Noon to assist students and families in completing the new and improved FAFSA.

 

CFNC has posted a convenient and searchable Map of this Saturday’s FAFSA Day locations - as well as Sample Social Posts and Spanish-language materials to help amplify the opportunity.

 

With this year’s delayed federal launch of FAFSA, Saturday will be an important moment to get the state off to a great start in building a record year of FAFSA completions.  

 

And as we all know, completing the FAFSA is the first and best step in helping more traditional high school graduates and adult learners qualify for financial aid at our public and private colleges and universities, as well as the state’s new game-changing NEXT NC scholarship.

NCSU SATELITE Camp for High School Sophomores

 

SATELLITE is a five-day STEM outreach and leadership development program with the goal of exposing high school sophomores from under-resourced communities in North Carolina to post-secondary educational opportunities in STEM and its many disciplines. SATELLITE Campers have had the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities including a field trip to the Museum of Natural Sciences, an egg drop competition, plant biology seminars, workshops in paper science engineering, textiles and design, game theory, and hands-on life sciences demonstrations led by genuine NC State faculty and students. SATELLITE’s mission is fueled by our desire and passion to help close the higher educational divide among communities through equitable opportunities and exposure. 

The 2024 program will run from May 18th - 22nd. The application encourages two letters of recommendation ( however are not required ) and a few short essays pertaining to the student’s interest in the field of STEM and college exposure. Due to the nature of the program, they do not consider a student’s academic success when reviewing applications, they are looking only for a student’s desire to maximize their experience at SATELLITE and hone their curiosity. The deadline to apply is March 8th, 2024. If accepted, there will be a $25 registration fee, but a number of need-based scholarships and financial assistance opportunities are available upon request.

2024 Durham Bulls TV Crew - Now Accepting Applications - Open House 7FEB @ 7pm

The Durham Bulls Explorer Post 50 is a co-ed unpaid internship program designed for students aged 14-20. This program offers a unique and invaluable chance to gain exceptional experience in the field of television broadcasting, supported and sponsored by the Durham Bulls, Fox 50, and Capitol Broadcasting Company.

 

In our remarkable 26th season, Post 50 is responsible for the live broadcast of Durham Bulls games on MeTV, WRAL Sports Plus, MiLB.com, and within the ballpark. Additionally, we contribute highlights for FOX 50 and WRAL newscasts.

 

This program is an excellent platform for students to explore their interest in broadcast communications and gain practical, hands-on experience in a professional setting.

Eastern NC Youth Activation Council - Open for Applications!

Special Olympics North Carolina is establishing an Eastern NC Youth Activation Council (YAC). This will be an elevated youth leadership opportunity for youth leaders with and without ID across eastern NC to represent Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools. Youth leaders will enhance their leadership skills, organize local Unified events and initiatives, and serve as advocates for inclusion. This group works together throughout the year to educate, motivate, and activate youth to become agents of change in their communities and advocate for the respect, inclusion, and acceptance of all people, regardless of abilities!

 

This commitment will run from January 2024 – June 2025. The council members will have virtual monthly meetings, as well as occasional in-person commitments. Middle school students, high school students, and college-aged youth are all welcome to apply for this opportunity! Students do not need to apply as Unified pairs; however, we will be selecting an equal number of students with ID and without ID. Please share the following application with your Unified Club members! Deadline to apply is Thursday, November 30^th.
